National Strategy Announced to Boost Illinois' Manufacturing ... - PoliticalNews.me (press release)

PoliticalNews.me – Dec 31,2014 – Kirk, Lipinski Announce National Strategy To Boost Illinois’ Manufacturing Industry

Manufacturing Accounts for 13.3 Percent of Illinois’ Economic Output

CHICAGO – U.S. Senator Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and Congressman Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.-03) joined local manufacturers at Atlas Tool & Die Works, Inc. in Lyons to discuss recently passed legislation that requires the creation of a National Strategic Plan for Advanced Manufacturing. A National Manufacturing Strategy will boost the competitiveness of the manufacturing industry in the United States, and greatly benefit the nearly 12 million Americans that work in the industry. The language that commissions this report was included in the recent fiscal year 2015 appropriations omnibus bill that was passed by both Houses and signed into law by the President last week.

According to the National Association of Manufacturers, Illinois manufacturing accounts for 13.3 percent of the state’s output and 10 percent of private non-farm employment. Additionally, manufacturing compensation is more than $29,000 higher than other non-farm employment in-state.

“This bipartisan, bicameral legislation is essential to Illinois, where manufacturing is the beating heart of our state’s economy,” said Senator Kirk. “Companies like Atlas Tool & Die Works not only provide manufacturing services to Illinois, but also to companies which supply our Armed Forces with parts that help keep our nation and our servicemen and women safe.”

Atlas Tool & Die Works, a family-owned manufacturing company which has been open for nearly a century, is a full service precision manufacturer offering a diversity of services such as sheet metal fabrication, metal stamping, laser cutting, fabrication and assembly. Owner Zach Mottl also served as Chairman of the Tool and Manufacturing Association of Illinois, which represents nearly 1,000 small to medium-sized manufacturers in the Midwest who employ close to 30,000 workers.

“This a big victory for a sector of our economy that over the years has provided so many high quality jobs in my district, in our region, and across the nation, but has taken many hits over the past couple of decades, especially during the recent recession,” said Rep Lipinski. “While manufacturing is by-and-large a private, market endeavor, few can disagree that government policy impacts manufacturing in countless ways.”

The manufacturing industry contributes $1.8 trillion to the U.S. economy each year, and on its own would rank as the world’s tenth largest economy. Current federal programs and incentives support conditions for growth in the industry, yet until now there has been no comprehensive national strategy. With passage of this legislation, there will now be a plan to improve U.S. competitiveness in manufacturing, increase domestic production and accelerate the development of an advanced manufacturing workforce.
